Preparing for Retribution

The next EVE Online expansion is upon us. Have you logged in to make sure you have a lengthy skill set in the queue? I just did, and I also took the opportunity to get my pod into my Vagabond. I don't know who is the assclown who decided to remove its frills and made it look like just a reskinned Stabber but I sure hope he got an earful. Anyway, this mistake will be erased tomorrow as the expansion will fix on of my favorite ships.

The new Stabber hulls are only a tiny part of the changes coming to EVE. T1 frigates are getting a huge boost, and a new set of destroyers will be leaving all four races' shipyards. But the change that will affect my play style the most will of course be the new Bounty/Crime system. Before I do something stupid I will have to read up carefully on all the changes because with the crazy fall season I've had with the drumline I admit I've fallen behind on my consumption of EVE information, be they dev blogs, player blogs or podcasts. Ah well, busy guy problems!

Oh and yeah, speaking of drumline, I can finally say I've played on a snare line. Here's me with an awesome toy!

It sounds as awesome as it looks :)
Fly loud and deadly!

Our cries have been heard!

A lot of Vagabond pilots have been yelling at CCP for the removal of the heavy cruiser's frills that made the Vaga look not only menacing, but completely different than just a Stabber with a new paint job. Blogger Rixx Javix of Eveoganda was most vocal about this, and I supported the cause even though I was unsubbed at the time. Well, it seems that now CCP has someone in charge of listening to what we say and not just watching what we do. A new dev blog by CCP Ytterbium has just dropped this bomb:

Now with MOAR FRILLZ !!!
And it even has new wingy bits to show once again that the Minmatar like things that are Fucking Vertical™! All in all I really like the new Stabber model as well, especially since I use (lose?) 'em a lot.

Thank you CCP for this much needed rectification on one of your worst design mistakes. All hail the return of the Vagabond, the ship designed just for me :)

Fly fast!

Nice price... I'll take two please!

Yesterday was my reconnection back to EVE after almost a full week out of the game. Various reasons include quality time with my Significant Other, NHL play-offs going extremely well for Montreal (until the first game against Philadelphia), battlemech warfare, parental duties, and not moving my computer for the parental weekend. Actually it's a good thing I didn't move the computer because the weather in Montreal was absolutely beautiful, especially on Sunday, and on a nice walk along the Lachine Canal with my boys I twisted my left ankle something nasty. At least we had made most of the nice day before it happened.

But yesterday night after the parental evening (don't try to figure out my schedule... it's complicated at best) I got on TQ to make sure all was cool with the characters - have to check what's up with my buddy Si Gong cuz his character is currently my alt - and do a mission or two. One of AMC's pilots had spotted a pirate gang that was camping in Gusandall but unfortunately we didn't have the numbers even for a Jihad fleet. I do invite the pirates to keep camping; we'll bring the fight soon™ :) So a quick L4 and L3 later, quick because a faction-fit Sleipnir in a mission is awesome, I had my wallet back to over 300 million ISK, so I felt like replacing the Vaga I had sold to one of my ex alliance mates in Providence.

The first thing I do before I start plopping ISK on the market is catch Letrange and ask him how much would it be for him to build me the ship. The market check that followed had me surprised though: 8 units of Vagabond at 110 million each. I don't think I've ever seen the Vaga at such a low price. With Let busy with whatever project he was working on I decided not to add to his work load and I bought the ship off the market and then proceeded to buy the modules and rigs. And each time I was buying an item I was amazed at how low the prices were. When all was said and done my Vagabond had cost me 138.4 million ISK... huh, OK! If I had just 50mil more in my wallet I'd buy a second one right off the bat. Now, I know next to nothing about industry and production, but is it me or have the prices for Tech 2 items dropped a lot? Anyway, at less than 140 million for a fully fit Vagabond I will not be the one complaining about it!

So this week's tentative schedule in EVE: Letrange mentioned something about needing interceptor practice so I'll start working on a curriculum, that way we can maybe make a class out of it. If it's anything like musical instruments, by teaching you get better yourself. I'm also hoping for some The PvP so the tackling practice can be put to good use. With the local pirates being a bit cagey (to use a polite term) and dock up when we show up for a fight, I'll probably head in the direction of one of the close-by Null-Sec regions. And if we have a good amount of pilots maybe something a bit better than a Jihad would be fun; one of the things I miss about BOZO is the Hurricane Gank Fleets. I don't think AMC can field as many 'Canes as BOZO could at the height of its power, but even 3 or 4 would be a pain in the ass to an enemy FC hearing "I'm down!" at every other gun cycle.

Another thing I'd like to do, most likely during the week when there's less pew-pew activities is a bit of exploration. I'm very unlucky at it but I tell myself that eventually the tide will turn and I will find something worthwhile. While it's still considered a carebear activity, at least it's a bit more occupying than just doing missions over and over. Plus, ninja-ratting in W-space when a wormhole is found is never boring, especially if there's a tower in the place :)

And out of EVE? Well, the possibilities are almost endless because Montreal is litterally blooming. We are hit with an extreme case of hockey fanaticism, the weather couldn't be more perfect, this Saturday is the Montreal EVE Meet, and at noon on Friday I'm on vacation for a week :)) From Monday to Thursday I plan on doing Sweet Fuck All online because I'll be with my girlfriend in her hometown of Cap-Chat Qc, one of the most beautiful places in the entire known universe. And the Friday after I get back will be the start of another parental weekend so I have the feeling that this vacation will go by all too quickly. The only thing that will slow me down a bit is that damn ankle. I had planned on doing a lot of walking along seaside cliffs and in Mont Albert National Park so I'll have to go easier on that, but in no way will it keep me from doing it anyway.

TTFN, so fly your hardest

Assaulting heavily

Finally things have quieted down a bit now that my move is done, and though I'm still out of game because of the start of another Dad Week things are now a lot less stressful and I can actually enjoy myself. Moving sucks. Period.

In the past few weeks as I had very little time to be in-game I decided to train something big that I had put off when the Quantum Rise speed re-balance was announced. I had then veered off the HAC path to concentrate on the interdictors. After I finally got into my Broadsword I started to train the battleship skills, but getting into the large T2 guns would take a long time so now that I can fly semi decent Tempests, Maelstroms, Megathrons and Hyperions (I don't have the missile skills for the Typhoon or the drone skills for the Dominix) it is finally time I come back to the ship I was aiming for since that faithful day in January 2008 when I first installed the EVE client. Back then I was reading every guide I could find, and also bombarding Letrange with every imaginable noob question. Among questions about what to train immediately, game mechanics, and that dreaded GUI, one of the questions I asked was a lot more long term for the 900k SP noob I was: what would be the best ship that would fit my flying style like a latex glove. My performance requirements were the following: I want a ship that accelerates like a Top Fuel dragster, hits like Mike Tyson, and has just enough of a tank to get out of dodge with no one the wiser. Letrange's answer: "You sir are a Vagabond pilot". Awesome... WTF is a Vagabond? :))

The first time I did a "Show info" and "View market details" on the Vaga had my eyes pop out of my skull and my jaw hitting my keyboard. Not only would this ship take just shy of Forever to train up for, but it would also take more ISK than I could ever imagine having... ah, the things that scare us when we start this daunting adventure! So slowly but surely I start walking down the HAC path from its very beginning, doing the best I could to polish up the skills that would allow me to fit the ship correctly when eventually I'd get it. Fast forward to the present and the time has now come. Millions of ISK don't scare me nearly as much anymore (though being a PvPer keeps me on the "poor" list) and all the necessary fitting skills are ready. On Tuesday, June 30th, Cozmik R5 will have acheived the ability to fly Heavy Assault Cruisers! And not only the Vagabond and Muninn of his Minmatar heritage, but also the Ishtar and Deimos because my moving hiatus gave me the time to train up Gallente Cruiser V; the drone and hybrid gun skills still need a lot of work but I'm slowly getting there especially because I trained up for a decently fit Taranis.

The main problem in flying these ships will be the difficulty in replacing the inevitable losses when I'll fly them in PvP. I will admit that my trade alt is doing better and better, but I'll also admit that I'm far from being able to buy each one of the ships, fit them, rig them, and get replacements. But I will make an exception where the Vagabond is concerned; I have tons of modules to fit it, and it's the ship I've wanted from the very start. Things would be slightly different if I were still in BOZO as these guys have THE BEST ship replacement program in the entire game, but until my eventual return (yes, you heard it here first, if they still want me of course!) I will learn to fly the ship while I myself take care of funding it. That will force me to fly it smart, but yes, there are very good chances that I'll be flying it the only way I know how: DANGEROUS >:))

Fly that way too... it's the only way

Damn boxes...

Hi there!

This is quite an event, 2 posts in the same month. Bring out the champagne! Yes, Real Life has been keeping me busy this summer but now that the back-to-school period is arriving things will slowly come back to normal, and before we know it we'll be neck-deep in White Stuff *shudder*. Snow is fine and dandy on a ski hill but ni town, ugh!

Well, as the title suggests, there was another alliance move lately to... haha sorry! Let's just say we're still in Curse and closer to various fires. At the moment it's extremely risky for ratting, but on the other hand there are targets galore! We can have perfectly good ops without having to tour 2 or 3 regions, and more often than not we end up fighting decently big pitched battles instead of running and gunning a few stray pilots. The fights aren't always successful but it's a totally diferent way of PvPing and the fun lasts a few minutes instead of a few seconds. My vehicule of choice for those ops is a Hurricane battlecruiser; I still have to work on some tanking skills but I think I have an idea where I'm going. For faster moving gangs I'm sticking to either Tech 2 fitted Rifters or interceptors; I'm having a bit of a slump with cruisers lately and as in most other games I've played, I seem to be at my best when I'm going extremely fast. Enter the so-called "Nano-Nerf"...

For about a month now CCP has been testing some pretty drastic modifications to the speed and mass (or lack thereof) that ships in EVE can attain. I haven't tested the modifications when they were on the test server but according to those who have, they are quite drastic. At the time of this writing the modifications have been taken off the test server for further tweaking, and some time this fall the changes will appear on the Tranquility server. The changes may put a twist to my EVE career; I was planning on flying a Vagabond HAC but apparently (all according to the tests on Singularity) it will be receiving a heavy set of reins to hold it back from it's current speed. So much so that some people have even started to post Vagabond setups with armor plating! As we say over here, "Pas de panique, Tabarnak !!!". According to EVE lore, the Vaga is known to be the fastest cruiser ever built and somehow I don't think CCP will re-write the entire lore just for a speed balancing issue. I don't expect Vagas to go as fast as interceptors as they do now though, but something tells me it will remain a very nasty ship and that a lot of people are panicking way in advance. EVE and paranoids... *rolls eyes*

In the meantime I'm training some back-up skills, and still got just that much closer to the Vagas as I now can fly Assault Frigates. But before I go on to bigger ships I will make sure that the backing skills are up to snuff; I want my battlecruisers to be as lethal as my frigates are fast, and believe me, they're FAST !!!

So until next time, fly with a knife between your teeth !!!
